Tina Sani in Ireland
|
Undoubtedly the highlight of the Yasin Foundation's 2009 fund-raising functions
was the visit to Ireland of Pakistan's 'undisputed queen of melody', ghazal
singer Tina Sani, who donated her stunning musical skills to the cause of
education for Pakistani women
Together with five accomplished Pakistani musicians - Abid Hussain on
Tabla and Pakhawaj, Wazir Sultan on Harmonium, Iqbal Hussain on
Harmonium, Abid Ali on Flute (bansuri) and Akhtar Hussain on Sarangi -
Tina Sani performed in Dublin on April 25 and 26, in Waterford on April 27 and
in Cork on April 28. |
| Their April 26 performance, at the Yasin
Foundation's fund-raising event 'From Sligo to
Sialkot', was part of a lunchtime programme
combining a mainly-Pakistani meal with a book launch and a musical performance
linking the work of Pakistan's most acclaimed poet, Mohammed Iqbal and Ireland's
renowned poet, W.B.Yeats. |

The book which was launched at the start
of the programme was by Gabriel Rosenstock,
who had translated some of Iqbal's poetry into the Irish
language. The Introduction to the later proceedings was by
Eva Geraghty,
grand-daughter of Brenda and Said Yasin (in whose memory the Yasin Foundation
has been named); and the first part of the music programme -
'W.B. Yeats in Music and Poetry'
- was performed by well-known Irish musicians and singers
Ronan Browne, Noel O'Grady, Martin Doyle and Des Geraghty.
The second part of the programme, performed by Tina Sani
and her group, with Irish readings by Gabriel Rosenstock, included
the first-ever rendition by Tina Sani of two pieces by
Iqbal which had been specially composed by her for this event:
SHIKWA/ The Complaint and JAWAB-e-SHIKWA/ Answer to
the Complaint.
For the full Commemorative Programme
of this memorable event, which includes excerpts from both 'Shikwa' and 'Jawab-e-Shikwa',
translated into English by Mr. Kushwanat Singh, as well as Biographies of both
Iqbal and Yeats and a commentary on both poets by
Eva Geraghty ('The Poet as the Soul of the Nation'),
